A file shelf for Mac: keep files ready to drag
Momo’s file shelf gives you a temporary place to keep files handy between apps. Drop a file on Momo, then drag it out when you are ready. The shelf keeps a reference to the original, rather than moving it into a new folder.
Stage the files for your next task
- Drop local files on Momo, or open the shelf and choose Add files….
- Collect the items you will need for your next task, such as a PDF and a screenshot.
- Drag an item from the shelf into an app that accepts that file type.
- Remove the reference from the shelf when you are finished.
For example, gather files before composing an email, then drag them into the attachment area. The receiving app decides how to handle the drop. Clicking a file’s name in the shelf reveals it in Finder if the original is available.
References are convenient, but are not backups
Your original files stay where they are. Removing an item from the shelf removes its reference and does not delete the original file. The shelf stores its list locally and holds up to 50 references.
A reference is not a second copy of the file. If the original cannot be found or its drive is disconnected, the shelf can show Missing and you cannot drag that unavailable file out. Restore access to the original or add the correct file again. Keep important files in your normal storage and backup workflow.
Export a different image format when you need one
For available image files, the shelf offers Convert. Choose JPEG, PNG or HEIC and save an exported copy. Maximum-edge options include original resolution, 1024, 2048 and 4096 pixels; JPEG and HEIC also offer a quality control.
The export keeps the source unchanged, applies orientation and removes metadata. It exports the first frame, so it is not a way to preserve an animation. JPEG does not retain transparency; choose an appropriate format for the image you are sending.
Keep the shelf small and purposeful
Treat the shelf as a staging area for a handoff: assets for a message, screenshots for a bug report or documents for a review. Clear out references after the task to make the next batch easier to find.
For copied text, use Clipboard instead. For a thought you want to edit, use Notes. The shelf is for local file references, not cloud storage or a replacement for Finder.
Common questions
Does removing a shelf item delete my file?
No. Removing a shelf item removes its reference; the original stays in its existing location.
How many files can I keep on the shelf?
The shelf holds up to 50 references. Remove references you no longer need before adding more.
Does image conversion overwrite the source?
No. Momo exports a copy and asks you to choose a different filename if you select the source path.
