Use a focus timer in your Mac’s notch

By the Momo team ·

A focus timer in the notch keeps the clock near the top of the screen while your main work stays in front of you. Momo offers three modes: Pomodoro for work-and-break sessions, Timer for a single countdown, and Stopwatch for elapsed time.

Pick the mode that fits the task

Use Pomodoro when you want separate work periods and breaks. Momo lets you configure work duration, short and long breaks, and the number of sessions before a long break. The panel shows progress and your completed sessions for the day.

Use Timer when the task has one time limit, such as reviewing a document before a meeting. Use Stopwatch when you want to observe how long something takes without choosing a deadline. Stopwatch includes lap recording. Momo runs one focus activity at a time.

Start a manageable work session

  1. Open Momo’s panel and select Focus. Choose Pomodoro before starting the session.
  2. Set work and break durations in the Focus settings. Start with an interval that feels manageable for your task; you can adjust it later.
  3. Choose one outcome, such as drafting an introduction or reviewing a pull request, then press Start.
  4. Use Pause if you are interrupted and Resume when you return. Skip moves to the next Pomodoro phase; Reset ends the current activity.

The collapsed island can show the running timer, so you do not need to keep the full panel open to check progress. Treat the timer as a cue for your chosen task, not as a promise that a particular interval will make you more productive.

Use a countdown for small jobs

Timer mode includes presets for 5, 10, 15, 25, 45 and 60 minutes. You can also type a custom duration, such as 25m, 1h30 or 10:00. The app accepts durations from one second to 24 hours and shows an error when the entry is not understood.

For example, give an inbox review ten minutes, write down the next action for unfinished messages, and stop when the timer ends. A short, explicit goal makes it easier to decide whether to start another session or move on.

Make breaks and calls work together

A break is a useful point to leave the keyboard, look away from the display or decide what to do next. Momo includes configurable break reminders and an option to advance Pomodoro phases automatically. Choose automatic progression only if it fits the way you take breaks.

Turn on Quiet Mode before a call if you want Momo to suppress reactions and notifications, including focus completion alerts. If the panel itself should disappear during screen sharing, use presentation mode. A focus timer is not an app or website blocker: Momo’s timer does not prevent you from opening distracting sites.

Common questions

Can I use just a timer without Pomodoro breaks?

Yes. Choose Timer for a standalone countdown, or Stopwatch to measure elapsed time.

Will the end-of-session notification interrupt a call?

Quiet Mode suppresses focus completion reactions and notifications. Enable it before the call if you want a quiet session.
